Was watching the game last night and the wife asked me why do Warrington get the name of Wires from?...Where i live the footie team get their name from the leather industry which the town was renowed for,,is it something like that?

Yeah, originally the team were made up of workers from the Wire industry that was once predominant in Warrington.

It's The Wire. THey were originally known as the Wirepullers due to the industry in the town.

yes you got it warrington had many factories associated with the wire pulling industry and the original nick name was "the wirepullers"

My great grandfather was a wire-puller who had all the ligaments in his left hand stretched after getting it caught in one of the machines. In the days before H&S it was a dangerous business.

My Granddad and all of his brothers only ever worked at Rylands and he is probably spinning in his urn because it no longer exists. My dad spent all of his working life at Rylands and Firth.
